How can you train a dog to dig in only one spot in the yard... ?

I am doing private lessons with this dog. He has an electric fence and we are working on some issues but wanted an answer for the digging in one spot only. The owner is fine with the one spot but what if he decides to find another one? I am not thrilled with electric fences ....they do take him for walks however.

I personally like the idea of a sandbox area - its different from the rest of the yard, can be enclosed (covered up too) and can be a lot of fun for the dog. You could bury toys and things to encourage the digging. Sand is cheap too, you can usually get a big bag for $5.

The biggest thing is to stay consistent - most dogs will dig in areas that are cool as it feels good in their paws. When the dog begins to scratch the ground, get them over to the good digging spot to redirect them. Think of it like house training a puppy, redirect and reward.

If the dog is digging near the edges of the yard he could be looking for an escape, but if its purely for fun and boredom, having a digging pit is a great outlet for dogs!
