This is my favorite question to be asked! The best way to understand what your dog wants, feels and needs is to spend more quality time with them! Training is an excellent way to open up communication between you and your dog. Anything from basic obedience to APDT Rally or Agility will strengthen the bond between you and your dog, not to mention be a lot of fun for you both! Other then training, canine body language tells you A LOT about what dogs are feeling and trying to communicate. A lot of dog "issues" with people are actually a result of us not understanding their body language and missing key compenents they're trying to communicate to us! "On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas is a great book on canine body language and a great place to start as well as "Canine Behavior - A Photo Illustrated Handbook" by Barbara Handelman which is another excellent resource.
