How do you teach a dog to not be so aggressive when someone pulls in the drive way?

We have a border collie that is very aggressive and protective when it comes to a friend pulling in the drive way. He isn't like that when the house hold people pull in.

This is probably his herding instinct kicking in. There are several ways you can solve this behavior, each dog is different and you have to spend some time figuring out what will work best for your dog.

My initial thought is to teach the dog an alternative behavior. If your dog is ball crazy I would get a tennis ball and teach your dog to come and sit in front of you when someone pulls in to the drive. Take the ball and toss it outside (out back in the yard if you have a fenced in yard). Otherwise just reward him by playing for a second and maybe crate him.

There is also a tool called the manners minder which is perfect for this type of thing.

If you can't seem to figure this out, hiring a dog trainer is always a good idea to help guide you.
