How do you train a 3 year old "rescue" dog to come when called? The dog stops looks at me and then runs the other way. How can I get him to come when called?

there is nothing wrong with cricket;s answer (run away to entice the dog to chase and find out what U are doing - their curiosity can be a big help here!). i think of that as the emergency tool for dogs or pups who have no recall training, tho.

for actually TEACHING the dog to recall, i prefer to use Levels Training.
the downloadable Free! book is on dragonflyllama.com
the list-group is on Yahoo-Groups at traininglevels
the database on the traininglevels Group will let U find other folks training with Levels
the on-line LOG to record progress, post pix, etc, is on honkersoftware

clicker-training works GREAT with Levels -
to start from scratch, go to *canis clicker training academy* (google) and sign-up for a WEEK of free one a day, one page lessons on beginning clicker training. it is fun, very forgiving, highly effective, and addictive, LOL. after U teach the dog to fetch a tissue when U sneeze, U will be hooked! ;--)

cheers, and happy training!

Your dog may have a bad history with humans that makes her a bit anxious about coming when called, so building your relationship and gaining her trust and respect are important. You have one key element to work with here... she stops and looks at you when you call. That's your "window of opportunity". Turn and run AWAY from HER. This will most likely get her to chase you to see what silly thing you are up to. Be sure to have some yummy treats available for when she catches you and play a little game with her. BTW, for safety's sake, she should not be off leash except in secure and safe areas until she masters her recall.

I would start by taking an obedience class to build up your relationship. If you have done that then there are two tricks I like to use. The first is to teach a word - here - or something else you dont already say normally (front?) You could also use a hand touch - use these and give a food reward 100% of the time you use that word over the next few months. If you are consistent then you'll have a dog who comes.

The other option is to really work on sit - we had a dog that would run away from us so we worked on distance sits and that seemed to help. She would sit, and then we would walk up and reward her for sitting. It kept her from running away!!

Good luck!
