I have a 8 month blue heeler that I rescued from a shelter. I have tried several times to put a colar on her. She slinks under my bed or goes to her crate. She will not play and avoids all human contact. I feel so guilty that I take the colar off. ?

First you need to be commended for saving this dog. Here is my advice:

First don't feel sorry for her that will only make it worse. You need to start creating positive associations with the collar and any other item/thing you want to socialize her with. With most of my suggestions I don't advise treats for dogs to get them to do something that we want them to do but in this case I would use a treat to help her associate the collar with a treat. Basically when she is around the collar that equates to getting a treat (positive reinforcement). If she is fearful be sure to not make sudden movements that will only make her more fearful. Once you establish your trust with her the treats can go away. We want her to trust and respect you so once you have the trust she then must obey (respect) and wear her collar. I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Can you find a positive trainer in your area? You need to pair positive experiences with people and objects. Usually food works. I mean high quality food like cooked chicken, cheese, soft easy to eat food. One exercise could be place the collar on the floor far enough away that she sees it but not close enough for her to run away. Give her cheese or chicken for just looking at the collar. Slowly (not in the same training session) move the collar closer. Work up to having the collar next her and eventually on her. I hope you are not trying to use a choke collar. Use a standard buckle collar.
Find a good positive trainer because you have several issues that need to be worked on with this dog. Good Luck.
