My female dog is terrified of intact male dogs. What should I do?

My female pointer has developed this strange fear of intact male dogs. She was not afraid as a puppy but slowly became more and more afraid. Usually if the male dog is larger than her and gets within 5 feet of her she panics and starts to scream. If he is her size or smaller she starts to growl and may even push him down if he doesn’t go away. I seems like it must be their smell or something since she reacts this way instantly as soon as they come near her before they even have a chance to do anything. Is this behavior natural? Is there anything I can do to help her overcome this fear? She will tolerate them being is the same park with her as long as they stay 5 feet away. I feel bad because the owners of the other dogs think she is agressive but really she is a very sweet dog but is just afraid for some reason.

I would get with a trainer who can evaluate the behavior in person and give you some tips. If the trainer has a well behaved intact dog you can begin to work with them. The goal is to keep her safe and avoid being more scared, but working on socializing her to these dogs to get through the problem.

Did something happen to her?
