Like some other people said...Puppy pads only teach the dog to use your house as it's bathroom. And nobody wants their house smelling of pee and poop.

So here's what you do....about 20 minutes after your puppy is done eating or drinking anything take it outside. Take a couple treats with you so that when it goes both poop and pee, you can give it lots of praise and treats. Do not go back inside until it does both. If you picked a smart puppy, it will soon learn that when he/she goes potty outside, they get oh so yummy treats and should learn quickly. Also, since it's a puppy, you should take it outside every 2 hours or so.

Take the Puppy pads back to Pet Smart and get a little crate to keep the puppy in while you're away. Most dogs will not go potty where they sleep, so you should be safe. When you come home, take the dog out as soon as you walk in the door.

Good luck.

**** The best way to use puppy pads is to use them to stuff underneath your door to keep the cold air from coming in. If you use them, your dog will only learn that it's okay to go inside the house, like I and a few others have already explained.

dont use puppy pads because they train your dog to go potty in the house. instead take your puppy out outside JUST to go potty. after the puppy drinks water, take him out in about 20-40 minutes and when he eats take him out in about an hour.

Don't use puppy pads, they teach bad habits, they teach its ok to pee and poop in the house also it is very unhygienic and filthy to let an animal intentionally releave itself in your house. Take the dog outside, where they're meant to go.

I have a dachshund and she is now a year. I think some dog breeds are more prone to being better at house breaking, and some are completely stubborn (like my little girl). I did repetition with her. It took her about 3 months to finally get the concept of "ok I have to go to the bathroom on the puppy pad", and now she never has an accident.

Although some people say you shouldn't allow your dog to use a puppy pad, and that you should take them out on the grass. Anyways, What I did with my puppy is about every 25-30 min (the first day) I would put her on the pad, with limited space for her to move around it and wait a couple minutes and let her go. If she had an accident on the carpet, I would put her immediately on the puppy pad. Honestly, it sucks house breaking a puppy. But I hope I helped a little.

Congrats on your new puppy though! Good luck!

EDIT- The reason I recomend puppy pads is because, I live in an apartment where I can't get outside and let her go all the time, 2nd when I go to work and I leave her in the kitchen, she needs to go to the bathroom somewhere.

Honestly, since she has been house broken I have yet to have her have any accidents or any other bad habits come from her using the puppy pad.

Return the pads.

Your dog will not only learn that it is acceptable to use your home as a bathroom, but then she will decide that she likes the carpet better.

Eventually, you, your friends and family will tire of your house smelling like a dog bathroom.

Rescues are full of dogs who were trained to go to the bathroom in the hous, and their owners got tired of it. Normal folks have no desire to adopt them of course.

Commit to being a good dog owner, which includes teaching the dog to go to the bathroom outside.

Puppy pads are not a good training tool. They make the process take much longer, cause confusion in your dog, and frankly unless the person is disabled puppy pads are for lazy dog owners.

Crate training and taking her out regularly will be much faster and better for you dog. It will make it easier for your dog to understand, potty outside not in. Pads teach them potty inside.

use the pads definitely! just train the puppy to go on them and then when you are ready to get her to go outside make sure you take the pad out with you so she know she is supposed to go outside to potty! after a while she will learn that the pad is out side and there for need to go out! then after a while you can gradually take it away so she just goes outside or if ya wanted to just continue to let it go outside on the pad for easy clean up!
