Puppy training question?

We are working on training our new puppy with small treats as rewards but she gets excited and snaps at our fingers to get the treats, which is painful. How can we teach her to accept the treats gently?

What I do with young puppies is close my hand over the treat and just calmly wait for the puppy to sit quietly and stop trying to snatch the treat. Once they stop trying, they get it. It takes a while, but they soon catch on that snatching won't get them anything. It's the foundation of teaching a puppy "leave it", a command they all need to know.

One technique you can do is called a "Take it".

Let the dog see you with the treat in your hand and then make a fist around it. Say "gentle" slowly and calmly while she's licing and sniffing your hand, when she calms down and looks away, open your hand and say "Take it". Repeat this many many times and she'll know how and when to take treats or toys without her biting you.

It happened alot to me when our puppy was first at home and before we got her into puppy classes. I would highly suggest in taking a puppy training course. We are doing that at Pet Smart and she's 2 weeks away from graduation and has learned alot of good starter behavior that all puppies should have.
