how do I teach my 8 month old puppy not to fight with my 8 year old dog. They have not yet met and I am terrified that she will beat my older dog up and hurt him. My husband has our 8 year old dog still in Arizona but will be bringing him home next week ?

My puppy has been attacked and bitten by her sister so I basically rescued her from a bad situation. I have had her with me for about 3 months. My mother brought her 10 month old puppy over to play and she attacked him. I am afraid that she will beat my other dog up and hurt him. I am too attached to her to even think about getting rid of her but I am also attached to my other dog that I have had for the last 8 years. Are there places that can teach her to be nice. If so, what are the basic fees to train them to stop fighting.

I would hire a trainer to come into your home and evaluate your pup. 8 months old is very young to be attacking - I wonder if you are mistaking her for rough play - either way a dog trainer is the best one to decide the course of action. Try looking at http://www.dogtrainersearch.com

A few tips on introducing dogs:

Do so in a non-territorial area
Start by taking both dogs for a walk near each other but giving distance
If you feel its safe for them to meet allow them to sniff and circle keeping the leashes loose
If the younger dog is more rambunctious, try keeping that one on leash and letting the older dog off lead.
Pick up all toys or food / chew items that could cause fights.
Take it slowly!

I also like to teach commands like place, and quick down stays to interrupt rough play.

Best of luck!
