One option (and a good one) is to hire a dog trainer to help you understand what to do when this happens.

I would try to increase the relationship with the son - have him do the feeding, walking, etc - all the basic needs. Try to decrease your giving into holding him all the time (if you do that) by asking the dog to sit before you give him attention. Lookup a program called nothing in life is free, it could be very helpful.

If you get in that situation and the dog starts acting like he is going to snap, put him down. If he continues, put him in his crate. Eventually he will hopefully learn that nasty behavior causes him to lose your attention.

Good luck!
