Well first you need to identify what kind of barking your dog is engaging in. Dogs bark for all sorts of reasons from protection/alert, boredom, attention seeking, play, anxiety and so on. If there is nothing outside I doubt it's because of an alert or a response to another dog but he may be trying to get your attention and clearly he has! Even though he isn't always getting positive attention from you. Regardless for some dogs even negative attention is reinforcing and as a result they will continue to engage in the barking behavior. Or if it's a result of boredom perhaps your dog simply needs more mental stimulation. I always recommend having lots of chew toys around for your dog and I prefer to feed my animals out of feeding toys such as a Kong rather then from a bowel. You could also try teaching your dog to bark and be quiet on cue. Not sure if that answers your question or not but hopefully it at least helps! Good luck!
